This past weekend, the state level of judging for The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition, took place. The Exhibition, now in its forty-eighth year, is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio. The exhibition is open to all of Ohio’s 1,112 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. The exhibition is a valuable incentive for our young people; it encourages an appreciation for the arts throughout Ohio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent which exist in our state.

The process of selecting artworks for the state exhibition begins on a regional level. The state is divided into 15 regional locations, with high school students in each region invited to enter work in that regional judging. Each region has a designated Regional Director, who is responsible for choosing the judges for his or her region and arranging specifics of the event.

The state judging takes place in Columbus; however, the judges for this level of competition are chosen from all over the country and are generally professional artists, college level instructors, or both.

From the 11,500 regional entries from the 15 regions, approximately 2,500 are selected to enter the state judging. State jurors then select 300 for the actual exhibition, with 25 of the 300 chosen to receive the Governor’s Award of Excellence. Scholarships are offered to seniors by over 30 universities and colleges of art.

The exhibition opens at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, across from the State Capitol, in April, and closes at the end of May. At the exhibition opening, students receive Awards of Excellence and scholarship awards.

Painting and Mixed Media students at OHHS are participating in the “Art in Root” program, through which they will receive 1–2 visits from a Great Parks’ interpreter with a native animal for natural history presentation, as well as a future trip to the parks to sketch the flora and fauna in our area. Students generated artwork based upon the December visit and selected artworks are currently displayed at the regional art exhibitions. OHHS students artworks can be viewed at the visitor center at Miami Whitewater forest on March 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th from 11am-5pm. The works currently on display will be juried and final selections will participate in an exhibition titled “Between the Miamis: Great Art for Great Parks” which will take place at Sharon Woods in April 2018.

Congratulation to the OHHS Art and Design students who will be exhibiting artwork at the 2018 University of Cincinnati, Blue Ash Campus, Ohio Regional High School Juried Art Exhibition! The UCBA Art Exhibition consists of 79 artwork produced by 67 high school artists, mentored by 15 instructors representing 8 different high schools in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Five Oak Hills Art and Design students were recently selected to participate in the inaugural class designed to expose high school students to professional printmaking practices at Tiger Lily Press with Artist Jonpaul Smith. The program to be piloted was conceived of by former OHHS Art Teacher and Department Chair Jan Thomas, who served as the Tiger Lily Press Education Chair.

The curriculum for the program was designed by Professional Artist and Printmaker Jonpaul Smith and current OHHS Art Teacher and Department Chair Jamie Schorsch. The curriculum is designed to expose the students to a variety of printmaking techniques while making use of  the professional grade Tiger Lily Press studio equipment. The goal of the program is to familiarize the student with studio life, infuse an interest in printmaking as an art form, and expose the student to new disciplines by which to creatively express their ideas.

Ms. Schorsch’s Drawing and Printmaking students recently participated in a Screenprinting demonstration and mini-workshop led by Art Academy of Cincinnati Printmaking Professor Matthew Dayler. Dayler’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, he is one of the founders of “Higher Level Art’, and a “Xlene” muralist. Admissions Counselor Tyler Hildebrand conferenced with Studio Art AP 2D Design and Drawing students about their Concentration themes and AAC opportunities prior to the Screenprinting presentation.
