The 2024 Save Local Waters OHHS Rain Barrel Art Projects Have Arrived at the Cincinnati Zoo!

The Rain Barrel Art Project, now in its 11th year, was created to promote the use of rain barrels throughout the Ohio River Valley area through a creative and educational medium. The Rain Barrel Art Project desires to educate people on environmental issues like stormwater runoff, watersheds, and water conservation.

Rain barrels continue to grow in popularity across the country. However, one of its biggest drawbacks is its dull appearance. Some people are less likely to use them given their negative aesthetic impact on residential and commercial landscaping, even though they conserve water and save money. The “Save Local Waters” initiative believes that producing beautiful artistic rain barrels that have unique painted details will make them more desirable and naturally increase interest to promote their use.

This year, OHHS artists in Ms. Kopf’s Painting and Public Art class and Ms. Schorsch’s National Art Honor Society created 4 Rain Barrels for the event! Completed Rain Barrels will be displayed at the Cincinnati Zoo from March 23rd through April 25th with the Online Auction taking place March 26th through April 26th and Artist Reception on April 25th.

3 OHHS Art and Design Students Selected for the 2024 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition with 1 earning Top 25 Distinction!

This past weekend, the state level of judging for The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition, took place. The Exhibition, now in its 54th year, is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio. The exhibition is open to all of Ohio’s 1,112 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. The exhibition is a valuable incentive for our young people; it encourages an appreciation for the arts throughout Ohio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent which exist in our state.

The process of selecting artworks for the state exhibition begins on a regional level. The state is divided into 15 regional locations, with high school students in each region invited to enter work in that regional judging. Each region has a designated Regional Director, who is responsible for choosing the judges for his or her region and arranging specifics of the event.

The state judging takes place in Columbus; however, the judges for this level of competition are chosen from all over the country and are generally professional artists, college level instructors, or both.

State jurors selected 320 pieces for the exhibition with 25 of the 320 chosen to receive the Governor’s Award of Excellence. Scholarships are offered to seniors by over 30 universities and colleges of art.

The exhibition will be on display at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, 30 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215 from April 21st – May16th. An awards ceremony will take place in The Riffe Center Capitol Theatre, 77 South High Street, Columbus, OH 43215 on April 21st at 2:00 pm.

OHHS Art and Design Students Advancing to the State Level of Judging for the 2024 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition!

The Exhibition, now in its 54th year, is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio. The exhibition is open to all of Ohio’s 1,112 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. The exhibition is a valuable incentive for our young people; it encourages an appreciation for the arts throughout Ohio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent which exist in our state.

In 2023, from the 8,299 regional entries, approximately 1300 were selected to enter the state judging. State jurors then selected 326 pieces for the exhibition with 25 of the 326 chosen to receive the Governor’s Award of Excellence. Scholarships are offered to seniors by over 30 universities and colleges of art.

Celebrating Art: Fall 2023 Top Ten and High Merit Students Announced

Congratulations to the OHHS Art and Design student whose art was selected as a High Merit piece for the Fall 2023 Celebrating Art competition and publication! Receiving a Top Ten or High Merit award means the art was an exceptional piece. Out of thousands of entries received for the Fall 2023 contest, it stood out as being one of the top 5% submitted. Students who have art selected as Top Ten or High Merit work will receive special recognition in the book as it is displayed as a Top Ten or High Merit piece.

OHHS Art and Design Student Awarded 1st Place at the Taft Museum of Art’s ARC Exhibition Opening!

OHHS Art and Design students enrolled in Schorsch’s Drawing and Printmaking class had the opportunity to participate in the ARC program this year. The Taft Museum of Art’s Artists Reaching Classrooms (ARC) offers an immersive educational experience to Greater Cincinnati high school students that includes a range of activities, including museum visits, classroom sessions with professional artists, and studio tours.

Throughout the first semester, students had the opportunity to engage in meaningful interactions and mentoring with artists Kay Hurley, Cedric Cox, Kevin Muente, and Saad Ghosn. The students built an understanding of artists, art, and society, working artists’ methods, exploration of various careers in the arts and culture sector, and appreciation for the Taft Museum of Art as a local resource with a rich history.

The experiences culminate in the creation of original artworks, 5 of which could be selected for a juried exhibition at the Pendleton Arts Center Annex Gallery. Students were challenged to consider their interpretation of “Wonder” and generated works that demonstrate their approach to the term after brainstorming, project planning, and setting up their own resource images.

5 students from each participating school were selected for this year’s competition. The 5 Drawing and Printmaking students who were selected for this year’s exhibition to represent OHHS were:

The “Wonder” Exhibition, which opened on February 18th, 2024 at The Annex Gallery, showcased the work of students from Aiken, Hughes STEM, McNichols, Oak Hills, Princeton, School for the Creative and Performing Arts, Spencer School for the Gifted and Exceptional Students, St. Bernard, Summit Country Day School, Walnut Hills, Western Hills, and Winton Woods High Schools. At the opening reception, Miles Frisch received the Noteworthy Award for the Best in Show from OHHS and Jackson Mundstock took home the 1st place award!

As part of the award, Jackson will continue to learn the professional aspects of the life of an artist by being paid for the use of his image, having the work reproduced onto the Taft Museum of Art’s reusable bags, having his work showcased to funders and the community to show the outcomes of the ARC program, as well as the creation of a museum banner that will be displayed outside of the Taft Museum of Art as well as Oak Hills High School!
