OHHS Art and Design Students Exhibiting at the 2019 CAM Teen Expo

Students from the OHHS National Art Honor Society and Ms. Schorsch’s Drawing and Printmaking classes will be exhibiting work at the Cincinnati Art Museum! The Cincinnati Art Museum education staff worked with a committee of teen art enthusiasts to curate an exhibition of artworks addressing the theme of “Music”. The County level PTA Reflections winners have been announced. “Heroes Around Me” is the theme for this year’s PTA Reflections Program which has been bringing the arts to life form more than 10 million students since 1969. Reflections encourages students of all ages to: unleash creative talents and be inspired; express themselves imaginatively in their artwork; experience the fun and joy of making art; tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme, and receive positive recognition for their original works of art.

OHHS Studio Art AP and the AAC Artist & Writer in Residence Program

Ms. Schorsch’s Studio Art AP 2D Design and Drawing students are participating in the Art Academy of Cincinnati’s Artist & Writer in Residence program. The program focuses on the 21st Century Thinking skill of ‘Creativity’ and how to think like an artist. Students have been working with our Artist in Residence, Jay DeFazio, exploring the creative process necessary to developing the Concentration section of their Studio Art AP portfolios. The Concentration of the portfolio focuses on the investigation of a theme which they selected to research and explore through the creation of a body of artwork. Students embarked on the Artist in Residence experience by discussing creativity and brainstorming, participated in group critiques of their works, and recently visited the 2019 Scholastic Art Exhibition at the AAC. At the exhibition, students explore 5 floors of artwork, identified works that impacted them, and crafted letters to the students who created those artworks in various school throughout the Greater Cincinnati area as a means of critical reflection.

The 2019 Save Local Waters Rain Barrel Art Project

The Rain Barrel Art Project was created to promote the use of rain barrels throughout the Ohio River Valley area through a creative and educational medium. The Rain Barrel Art Project desires to educate people on environmental issues like stormwater runoff, watersheds and water conservation.

Rain barrels continue to grow in popularity across the country. However, one of its biggest drawbacks is their dull appearance. Some people are less likely to use them given their negative aesthetic impact to residential and commercial landscaping, even though they conserve water and save money. The “Save Local Waters” initiative believes that producing beautiful artistic rain barrels that have unique painted details will make them more desirable and naturally increase interest to promote their use.

This year, Ms. Kopf’s Painting and Mixed Media students and Ms. Schorsch’s NAHS students will be creating 4 Rain Barrels for this year’s event. Congratulations to all of the students who were selected by their peers to submit pieces for the jurying.

Congratulations to Allyson Albertz, McKenzie Becker, Matthew Burg, and Cierra Mays on the selection of their design by the “Save Local Waters” committee for this year’s event!

2019 Overture Awards Nominees to Participate in Regional Competition

The Overture Awards is a program that recognizes, encourages and rewards excellence in the arts among Greater Cincinnati students in grades 9-12. Its mission is to encourage arts education as an integral part of a student’s academic experience and to create an environment that encourages training in, and appreciation of, the arts. The Overture Awards Competition is the area’s largest solo arts competition and offers awards in six artistic disciplines: creative writing, dance, instrumental music, theatre, visual art, and vocal music. For the 2019 competition, students may win $4,000 (one awarded in each discipline) or $1000 finalist award. Judges at all levels of the competition are drawn from the professional arts community.

Best of luck in the Regional Competition this weekend to our OHHS Art and Design students Allyson Albertz and Kaitlyn Delaney, who were nominated by Ms. Schorsch to participate in this year’s competition.
