As summer approaches its end, so is the 16th year of ArtWorks Summer Apprentice Program. Since the beginning of June, over 115 apprentices (ages 14-21) have been hard at work beautifying the Greater Cincinnati area and bringing joy to others through their artistic creations. Once again, this summer Oak Hills High School students, alumni, and teachers have been a part of this unique and rewarding apprenticeship program. Stop by the following sites it see what these artists have been up to!
Julie Larbes (Class of 2012) is working with the Hero Design Company. Presented by ArtWorks, the Hero Design Company’s mission is to show the world that regardless of limitation or circumstance every child possesses an amazing and unique array of strengths and real world super powers. Their goal is to engage, encourage, and empower children facing emotional, physical, or medical hardship through the creation of custom superhero capes. Together we seek to unite our community and prove that within every child lives a true HERO.
Lauren Reis (Class of 2012) is lending a hand to the Duke Energy Convention Center mural. The design created by local artist and University of Cincinnati D.A.A.P. instructor Jenny Ustick features the “hands that built Cincinnati”. The mural design is inspired by the mosaic murals in Union Terminal and the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
Dani Tellez (Class of 2012) has been painting away at the 12th and Vine mural, located in front of the Art Academy of Cincinnati where she attends school. The design for the 12th and Vine mural was created by local artist and AAC instructor Kim Krause. Dani is very busy this summer and has also earned herself an internship at Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center!
Paul Loehle (former OHHS student teacher and long-term substitute) is serving as the Lead Artist and Project Manager for the Queensgate Firefighter’s Mural. The mural, located at West 8th and Freeman, showcases the history and traditions of Cincinnati Firefighters. If you look closely, you will see that OHHS art teacher Steve Groh has become a part of the mural as well!
Jamie Schorsch (OHHS art instructor and Art Department Coordinator) has been hard at work on the Licking River Greenway and Trails murals in a painting studio at Northern Kentucky University and on site at the trails. Jamie is leading a team of 6 apprentices in the creation of 9 murals that will be installed on the gatewell structures along the trail. Look closely at the designs and you may recognize the work of 2 of the artists selected from a Call to Artists submission for the designs- Paul Loehle and Jamie Schorsch!
